From the Alpine peaks to the Sicilian coast, Italy is feeling the effects of climate change more than ever. This summer, from July 10th to August 2nd, Missione Italia took meteorologists from 3bmeteo and experts from leading national agencies and institutions on a journey to document and discuss these transformations. The tour visited evocative locations across the country, offering a first-hand look at how rising temperatures, shifting weather patterns, and human activities are reshaping both the environment and our way of life.
One of the most striking stages took place on July 29th in Sicily, at the Laghetti di Marinello. Hosted in collaboration with ISPRA, a partner of the SD-WISHEES project, the event focused on the region’s growing exposure to hydroclimatic extremes—including heavy rainfall, prolonged droughts, and water stress—and the profound consequences these have for ecosystems, communities, and cultural heritage.
Beyond raising awareness, the discussion emphasized the vital role of research and institutional collaboration in tackling these challenges. Two major initiatives were highlighted:
SD-WISHEES – An EU project dedicated to finding optimal solutions for protecting and promoting cultural heritage while overcoming barriers to international cooperation in the Water–Climate–Cultural Heritage (WCCH) Nexus.
C3S NCP for Italy – A national initiative coordinated by ISPRA, which develops hydroclimate services using products from the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), integrating them into operational tools and predictive models.
As climate and human pressures continue to intensify, initiatives like Missione Italia remind us that understanding the problem is the first step toward building resilient, sustainable solutions—not just for nature, but for the cultural and societal fabric that defines Italy.
